You should try a local box scheme which will deliver fruit, vegetables (and other groceries if you want them) to your very doorstep. This takes the hassle out of even worrying about the packaging - because there is none - and most of the schemes are certified and can tell you exactly where the produce came from. The scheme certainly takes advantage of the seasonality of produce, aims to work with local producers and usually include recipe ideas in your box. You can even exclude the things you don't like, so if the kids hate spinach you will never receive any! I really enjoy being surprised by what comes along each week and it saves me lugging heavy bags of veg back from the shops each week. A list of schemes operating in your area is available from the Soil Association - http://www.soilassociation.org.

As a family we have got really into eating food in season cos it tastes so much better. We have scouted out farm shops-we didn't realise just how many there are around-and have found that they are great value for money. They also have the added incentive of seeing animals and tractors which keeps the kids happy! We have found that we don't need to buy every thing organic as the stuff from the farm shop is so fresh, and we were amazed at how cheap it is compared to the local super market. Well worth a try.

Certain foods certainly taste better, but some foods, such as bananas don't necessarily need to be organic, as their skins are peeled off.
